The winners of the design competition co-sponsored by NAFA and the Hellenic Association of Furriers were awarded on Friday, March 28, 2014, during the Fur Excellence in Athens Fair. The Metropol Exhibition Center, the venue for the four-day fair, also provided the opportunity to display all of the garments created by the ten finalists in the contest.
Now in its third year, the competition offers students at universities and design schools throughout Greece an introduction to NAFA fur products and the opportunity to submit sketches with the potential of having their fashion inspirations manufactured and become eligible for one of the grand prizes.
The initial round of judging resulted in ten finalists being selected. During the next stage, a panel of judges reviewed the finished garments, interviewed the students and made the final choice of three winners. Judges included: Vasili Kardasis, Fashion Professor, Great Britain; Elena Meselidou, Fashion Marketing, Greece; Svetlana Luisina, Fashion Journalist, Moscow; Makis Langiotti, Fur Design & Manufacture, Greece; and Bobby Poulios, NAFA, Greece.
Following a brief introduction by each of the ten finalists of their design, the scores were counted and winners announced. First prize went to Lina Apostolou and second prize to Zoi Skrivanou; both students attend A.T.E.I of Thessaloniki. Third place was taken by Elodie Karkafiris, a student at Akto College. The garments were manufactured by Idea Fur Moda, Finezza and PT Artisti Elena, respectively.
A large crowd of buyers, manufacturers and media gathered for the presentation ceremony. Bobby Poulios presented the awards and congratulated all the students. On behalf of the Hellenic Association of Furriers, Makis Langiotti thanked NAFA for the tremendous support that they have given to the Greek Fur Market and the future of the industry.
The three award winners will receive an all expense paid trip to Toronto, Canada for a weeklong workshop at Studio NAFA. Here they will have the opportunity to learn more about the fur trade, fur trends and design techniques.
